Why the Same IT Problems Keep Coming Back

Most IT support is built around closing the next ticket. Something stops working, a ticket is created, a fix applied and the ticket closes. Job done, until the next time it happens again. That model is a short term ‘fix’, it isn’t an IT solution.

In this guide System 15 Director Nick Rowntree highlights how small, regular IT issues might be masking a much bigger problem

The Wi-Fi drops out in the same meeting room every week. The shared printer needs restarting every other Tuesday. Someone’s account locks out right before a client call, and it’s not the first time.

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s not unique. It’s a sign of how your IT problems are being handled, not how unlucky you are.

An IT ‘fix’ isn’t the same as an IT ‘solution’

Most IT support is built around closing the next ticket. Something stops working, a call or email requests a ticket. Someone gets it working again and the ticket closes. Job done, until the next time it happens again.

That model is a short term ‘fix’, it isn’t an IT solution.

The classic ‘switch it off and on again’ can genuinely solve many issues. But while a reboot gets someone back online, it doesn’t explain why their laptop kept dropping connection in the first place.

A password reset gets someone back into their account; it doesn’t explain why that account keeps locking them out. Treating the symptom is faster and cheaper in the moment, which is exactly why it’s so easy to keep doing it ticket after ticket, month after month.

You may be paying for IT problems twice

Here’s the part that’s easy to miss: if problems keep recurring, you’re not just paying your IT support invoice, you’re also paying in the lost time. Every time you lose ten minutes here, half hour there, the client meeting that started late because someone couldn’t log in.

Multiply that across a team of fifteen, twenty, or thirty people, and these minor recurring issues stop being minor. They become a quiet, ongoing cost that never shows up on an invoice but shows up everywhere else; in frustration, in slower work, in the sense that IT is something you manage rather than something that just works.

What an IT solution looks like

Breaking this vicious cycle isn’t complicated, but it does require someone to investigate the problem rather than just fix the issue.

In practice, that means:

  • Looking for the pattern, not just closing the ticket. Has this happened to this person before? This device? This time of day?
  • Asking why before asking what. “What do I need to do to make this go away right now” and “why is this happening” are different questions. Only one of them stops it coming back.
  • Checking it against the bigger picture. Recurring faults are often a symptom of something wider; an ageing switch, an outdated router, a device that’s reached the end of its useful life, a permission set up incorrectly months ago.
  • Fixing the cause, then confirming it stays fixed. A real fix gets monitored afterwards, not just closed and forgotten.
  • Someone owning the outcome, not just the ticket. The difference between a help desk and a genuine IT solution is whether anyone is responsible for “this shouldn’t keep happening,” rather than just “this is fixed for now.”

None of this needs to be complicated or expensive. It mostly needs someone whose job is to ask “again?” out loud, rather than quietly resetting the same thing for the third time this quarter.

A simple way to review your IT support

If you’re not sure whether your current setup provides a real IT solution or just keeps closing tickets, a short IT health check will usually tell you. It looks at what’s actually been recurring, why, and what it would take to stop it for good, without committing you to anything.

Get a simple IT health check from System 15 and find out what’s really behind the issues that keep coming back.

FAQ

Is a managed IT service expensive?

Not compared to the alternative. Pay-as-you-go IT support looks cheaper until the invoice for fixing something arrives. As we cover in the article, that cost is rarely just the invoice; it’s the recurring downtime, the lost billable hours, and the same fault happening again next month. A managed IT plan replaces that unpredictability with one fixed, monthly fee, so you know what you’re paying and get proactive monitoring designed to stop issues recurring in the first place.

Do you only support businesses in Gloucester and Cheltenham?

We’re based in Quedgeley, Gloucester, and most of our clients are across Gloucestershire, including Cheltenham, Stroud, Tewkesbury, Cirencester and the surrounding areas. We also support businesses across the wider South West, and nationally and internationally where our managed service is their primary IT solution.

How quickly do you respond when something goes wrong?

Response times depend on the severity of the issue and your service plan. Our SLA also offers consistency. With a managed plan you get a defined response time and a team who already know your setup, not a different person starting from scratch each time. Contact us to talk through SLAs for your type of organisation..

Is managed IT support right for a small business?

Yes, and it’s often where small and growing businesses get the most value. Businesses with 10 to 50 staff typically don’t have the budget for an in-house IT team but are too large to manage IT informally. Managed IT support gives you a full team of specialists, enterprise-grade tools and a predictable monthly cost. It also means no single point of failure because you’re not dependent on one person who knows where everything is.
